Default Chest / lung pain

Had a strange experience after my race yesterday. Didnt feel quite 100% pre race but went ok anyway. Couldnt seem to get quite enough air into my lungs during the ride (hot and humid)

Rode a fairly good time with HR as normal.

Afterwards and for the rest of the day I had a feeling of having strained my lungs...they would feel sore when moving / breathing heavily. Has gone completely this morning.

Has anyone got any light to shed on what it might be ?

Thanks

Peter

Unhappy Re: Chest / lung pain

I wonder if u can strain intercostal muscles (ribs) and feel the described pain.?
But as they say," if pain persists...seek medical advice"

exercise induced asthma? dehydration? allergies?

how was your power output?

anyway, as aussie71 says, go see a doctor.

Maybe the case - have suffered with hayfever before but not Asthma.

No monitor on bike but time would indicate that power was about normal. Just seemed to be grovelling more for the effort and took longer to recover. Today am in good shape again after a good nights rest. Can you strain intercostals ??

Cheers anyway.

i'm only guessing at possible causes as i'm not a doctor... which is what i'd advise you to see.

not necessarily the case, my PB (and i suspect many peoples) was acheived at a lower power than my best TT power (i.e. the environmental/topographical conditions were more conducive to faster times)

my guess is you can strain intercostals, and i think i've done this once or twice -- but this has only occured at periods of very low fitness after being off the bike for a long period of time and have tried to go to intensely too quickly

I had a comparable experience in the summer of 2003. After mountain biking on a hot and humid day, I had chest pains and trouble breathing deeply for a week or more afterwards. Bear in mind I have allergies and asthma. My doctor did an upper chest X ray, but found no signs of pneumonia, infection, lesions, etc. My heart and rib cage were also normal.

The best we could figure out was that I had a bad allergic/asthmatic reaction. Once I rested and took better care of myself, I was back to normal. The next time I went back to those same trails, I felt great and had a blast!
