I recently built up a new Heckler frame and after a month or so of bedding everrything in it rides like a treat... Except that the bottom bracket makes such a noise its embarassing to ride down the road. It takes the slightest amount of pedal pressure to make a craking/cracking noise (and no the frame hasnt failed). Ive taken out the BB, cleaned the threads, regreased them, cleaned and greased the axles; I've tightened the chainring bolts and regreased my pedals and Im at a loss what else to do.
Would this happen if I have the wrong size BB? Or if I have overtightened the cups? The face of the BB shell is slightly uneven (paint) is that likely to be a cause??? Any suggestions greatfully received Matt Jones |

Are you sure your BB doesn't just need to be replaced? |

Hecklers seem to be notorious for these "mystery" creeks. I am on my second one and both could creek or crackle once in a while. A buddy's bike does the same thing as mine. Ours don't sound as bad as it seems yours does. Make sure everything that pivots is fine and everything is torqued properly. I contacted SC about the noises several years back and they basically said it wasn't anything worth worrying about. I'm not very comfortable with that plan, but I've NEVER had any issues with frame failure. Until I "fell" off a 12'-15' drop that is. I found that if there is paint anywhere any part of the BB or it's hardware touches the frame it can exacerbate the issue. Good luck with it. Please, if you come across something that "solves" it, let me know. I'd appreciate it. K. |
