Question Newbie....mountain bike choice?

Hi all,

I am a 29/male/185cms/90kgs looking at buying a mountain bike in the $450-$550 Aussie Dollar range.

Aiming to start on road to build on fitness then onto trails as fitness and confidence allow.

Visiting web and bike store advice, 2 contenders :

AVANTI ESCAPE 2004
Specs
Price - AUD$450

GITANE ROCKS T2
Gitane Specs
Price - AUD $480

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks very much for your time.

hey beatto, the avanti would be a nice choice.
If you can afford to put a couple more hundred into your budget you could get the avanti ventura, very nice beginners bike.
good luck

Go second hand, For about that much money you can probably pick up a bike that was retailing for $800-900 a year ago that someone has barely used.

Bargain hard and you might get something even better. At around the $1000 RRP you start to get a "serious" MTB which will handle a decent pounding and not weigh a ton
