Default North Island, NZ road info

Hi -

My friend and I are doing a 10 week tour of parts of New Zealand in Jan-Mar. We have some time to spend in the Tongariro National Park area of North Island and I'm hoping someone can help me decide about a road I located on a map. It runs between SH 1 and Napier but goes through what looks like pretty wild country passing through Erewhon, Kuripapango and the Ngaruroro River valley, Willowford, then finally Omahu on Route 50. It looks to be perhaps a gravel road and would be an access point to the Kaweka Forest Park.

Anyone know if this road is suitable for mountain biking? Is the country nice? Is the Kaweka Forest Park worth a visit? Is there a website that might help us plan a trip though there?

Many thanks,

I have never been there, but the New Zealand trip has been a dream for about 45 years.
A Google search on your subject turned up the following URLs:
http://www.tramper.co.nz/index.cfm/...ace/PlaceID/31/
http://www.craigpotton.co.nz/Produc...aps/maps/kaweka
http://www.newzealandoutdoors.co.nz...rks/kaweka.html
http://www.wave.co.nz/~chrix/Kaweka2.html
http://www.doc.govt.nz/Explore/001~...-Park/index.asp
There are many more listed but from what I saw and read, I think that walking/hiking would work.
See some nice photos at:

I look forward to your report on the tour.

Thanks David - I'm checking those links out. The pictures were nice but I don't know if they were taken on the road in question or not.
One other link talks about various roads by name but I haven't figured out whether any of them are actually the road I can see temptingly visible on the map I have, which is by the way, a 1: 900,000 Globetrotter(tm) Travel Map of NZ.

So, I'm still looking. No matter where we end up going, we're sure to have a good trip.
