I was wondering if you could put disc brakes on any model mountain bike or if it has to be designated as compatable. I have a Trek 4100 and want to put on some disc brakes. But I don't know if I need a higher end model to do so.

You need hubs that are disc receptive, and disk brake mounting tabs on the frame and fork.
