Post Velochick heads to California

Hi everyone,
This is my first time on this forum. I am from Toronto, Ontario Canada and I want to leave the cold nasty winter for the months of January, February and March, to head some place sunny and train my butt off. Then, I want to come back to Toronto and enter some races and kick some butt.

San Diego is one of my options. So, I will be flying down there tommorrow morning for the weekend to check it out.

I am going to scout around the area but, can anyone make any suggestions as to where to ride and if there are any good group rides I could join in on? Any clubs that you might recommend?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

VeloChick

I hope you can deal with the relative heat compared to canada.
It may be Winter in california but it can still surprise you.
I lived in Santa Cruz about 14 hours north of diego and we commonly saw a bright and hot X-mas day.

Whatever you do, don't tell her about the riding in SC, it'll bust that little secret wide open. Shhh… Um, yeah… pretty flat down there by the ocean, eh? Not a hill workout to be found. Nope, not Santa Cruz, vanilla rides there… nothing to see there, move along now. Cmon, spill the beans!

Okay, so I went there and now I'm back. Pat was right! San Diego is a cyclists paradise. INCREDIBLE! I can't wait to go there... and I've already met some die hard roadies to help me out! Yeahooo! See ya there in January! Thanks for the info!

Oh and one more thing. There were plenty of rides and hills. There is also a book on San Diego Cycling if anyone is interested. It has all sorts of rides outlined. Excellent city! If you go, I highly recommend a hot air balloon ride as well in a place called Del Mar. FABULOUS!

Actually, I was referring to Santa Cruz as "SC." Sounds like you found some pimple to ride. SD is a very outdoorsy place with plenty of people to play along with you.

have fun.

Velo,
There is also a weekly training ride up in the Oceanside area north of SanDiego and south of DanaPoint. Might be seasonal but last I heard it was still active.
I'm in Wisconsin now so I'm out of touch with the southwest coastal region.
