Yeah, well since my post I've recovered to a great extent. There is a nasty virus in scotland at the minute which can floor you for about 3 days. A bad flu is coming to the UK aswel because of the long summer and lack of frost so get the jag if you can!

I believe in flu shots. I've only had the flu once, and I didn't have a flu shot that year. I will get one every year from now on!!!

With a predicted bad flu season this winter, it's a good idea for everyone to get one. In the Army, we were forced to get flu shots every year. I never saw anyone ever get the flu in the military.

The only shot I ever reacted to was a bubonic plague shot. We all had sweats, fever, chills, etc. I guess better than the real thing!!!

2 possible explanations:
First, some people can get flu-like reactions to the flu vaccine. Usually these are mild & only last a day or so.
Second, you may have been incubating a virus at the time you got the needle or else have been exposed to some sick people in the waiting room whilst awaiting the injection.
If you took a few days to get better, it is probably the latter.

Unlucky man, theres nothing worse than feeling down like that, just use it as experience for when you come back and kick ass.

pj_s:

Bummer about the flu. If you have never had it, you think it's just a bad cold, but it really goes way beyond that. I vomited the night I got sick, had a fever over 100 degress F. for about 5 days, couldn't eat anything for almost 3 days, couldn't sleep, had chills and shakes combined with hot flashes and sweats, body aches and was really depressed also.

You can "carry on" with a cold, but the flu will drain every ounce of energy from your body. It can take many weeks to months to fully recovery from the flu.

Since most competitive riders are usually in some state of supressed immunity due to the heavy volume of high-intensity training, we are really not much different than others with medical conditions that have lowered immunity as well. It's not uncommon for professional riders to get sick during the racing season.

The shot is painless, most people have no side effects whatsoever, and is cheap if you have to pay for it yourself. It takes up to 2 weeks for your immune system to produce enough antibodies for maximum protection.

I got my flu shot last week, it cost $20. I trained that day, and went hard the next day with no side effects. Getting a flu shot only makes sense if you regularly train hard. I will always get one!!!

Hope you get better soon!!!

thanks J-MAT,

have started careful training again, although heart rate and recovery times are far from 100%, it's good to be moving again.
next winter I think I'll go for the shot!
