I am not a mountain biker myself, however I do know several people who enjoy this as a hobby. See my website. It is explained in detail. I already have done. Bicycles should not be allowed in any natural area. They are inanimate objects and have no rights. There is also no right to mountain bike. That was settled in federal court in 1994: http://home.pacbell.net/mjvande/mtb10. It's dishonest of mountain bikers to say that they don't have access to trails closed to bikes. They have EXACTLY the same access as everyone else -- ON FOOT! Why isn't that good enough for mountain bikers? They are all capable of walking.... I live in a different country to you, so that doesn't apply here. I haven't heard any mountain bikers complain about that - those that I know stick to legal places approved by the council, or on their own private land. A favorite myth of mountain bikers is that mountain biking is no more harmful to wildlife, people, and the environment than hiking, and that science supports that view. Of course, it's not true. To settle the matter once and for all, I read all of the research they cited, and wrote a review of the research on mountain biking impacts (see http://home.pacbell.net/mjvande/scb7). I found that of the seven studies they cited, (1) all were written by mountain bikers, and (2) in every case, the authors misinterpreted their own data, in order to come to the conclusion that they favored. They also studiously avoided mentioning another scientific study (Wisdom et al) which did not favor mountain biking, and came to the opposite conclusions. I will ignore both views on this research, as you are also likely to be biased and likely to come to the conclusion that you favour. Those were all experimental studies. Two other studies (by White et al and by Jeff Marion) used a survey design, which is inherently incapable of answering that question (comparing hiking with mountain biking). I only mention them because mountain bikers often cite them, but scientifically, they are worthless. Mountain biking accelerates erosion, creates V-shaped ruts, kills small animals and plants on and next to the trail, drives wildlife and other trail users out of the area, and (worst of all) teaches kids that the rough treatment of nature is okay (it's NOT!). What's good about THAT? You kill small bugs when you walk on them. How does that make you feel? Kids have to learn the hard way sometimes. Firstly, none of them lie. Or at least don't lie any more than any other person - mountain biker or not. See? You just lied! I have yet to meet a mountain biker who doesn't lie. The reason they lie so much, I believe, is that it is impossible to defend such a selfish, destructive sport without lying. I didn't lie. That is my opinion through what I have experienced. You obviously don't have a particularly clear understanding of the word lie. If I am such a liar, then this disproves your point on how mountain bikers are such bad liars compared to others - I am obviously just as bad. Also, there are a great deal of things that cause more harm to wildlife - mountain bikers being very low down on this list. So you admit that they harm wildlife! Yes I am. But if you are that worried about the wildlife, you should concentrate your time more on things that actually do a noticeable amount of harm to wildlife. All humans for example. Why don't you kill us all? Or at least all carnivores. All humans cause problems for wildlife in some way or another, I expect that even you do. I don't see how mountain biking is lazy at all. The lazy people are those who sit at home in front of the TV, computer or drive to places down the road. Then why are they too lazy to WALK? Bikes are a LABOR-SAVING DEVICE! Perhaps they don't want to walk. Just a personal preference. Cars are a worse example of this, why don't you hate all drivers instead? I don't see the problem of having labour saving devices. Why do we have aeroplanes? People shouldn't have all the hard work taken away from walking for months, when they could fly for just a few hours. Oh no the aeroplanes are making people lazy! They are a LABOUR SAVING DEVICE. AHH. Much of technology has developed today to also be labour saving devices - so that more things can be done. Maybe your time isn't as precious to waste as everyone elses. It's better exercise than cars which are far faster. Just because you don't agree with a person's hobby, this doesn't mean you have to disagree with them on all all aspects, especially who they are. This shows how you are very narrow minded - a trait which psychologists such as yourself shouldn't have. I'm not narrow-minded, liar (you just lied again). I just tell the truth, something that mountain bikers (and their friends) can't stand. How did they trick you into defending them? Do you REALLY believe their propaganda????? Most non-mountain bikers don't! Are you really THAT naive????? Thank you for calling me a liar again, that is my opinion also. I think what you talk about is complete bullshit but I don't call you a liar. I'm glad you have now extended the evilness of mountain bikers to their friends also. You seem to be an extremely paranoid person - any normal person would have these kinds of hang ups on something slightly more important than people mountain biking. They didn't trick me actually, I just find it rather amusing how you have such strong opinions on such a petty matter. If I were to show your opinions to any other friend of mine who did't know a mountain biker, I am sure they would find it similarly funny how you seem to hate all mountain bikers. A bit prejudiced I think. Yours sincerely, Chloë Shipton Sent from Yahoo! Mail. A Smarter Email. -- I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to humans ("pure habitat").
