Petacchi in year-long ban

Eurosport - Tue, 06 May 11:35:00 2008

Italian cyclist Alessandro Petacchi has reportedly been banned for a year by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after testing positive for excess salbutamol in last year's Giro d'Italia.

The Italian media broke news of Petacchi's ban.

The CAS was not available for comment, while a spokesman for Petacchi's Milram team and his lawyer said they had received no official statement.

Petacchi, who had a medical certificate to use salbutamol in an asthma inhaler, is due to skip this month's Giro anyway because of bronchitis but now looks set to miss the Tour de France.

The news comes hot on the heels of a positive test for Patxi Vila of Lampre, who had excess testosterone in his bloodstream.

Bet CONI are well chuffed. Who will they try and pin next? Gibo and Ricco's hormone levels?

So is Peta one of those big names the UCI had been keeping an eye on?

Neither Patxi nor Bileka are the big name the UCI say will face sanctions.

Klöden? It's Giros turn to get a leader pulled out of the race...If it's Klöden then Astana is heading for a double, with Vino pulled from the Tour. And they still have a chance to make it a triple with Contador racing the Vuelta.

It could be Popovych then, since Bileka is leaving.

Pulling an Astana rider will be the death blow for JB. I would say that it is unlikely...

I will have to go back to find some article's regarding the testing at the 2007 Giro. But I thought that most if not all of the hormone level tests performed by CONI on the Italian riders were somewhat suspicious. Perhaps DiLuca's were extreme but I vaguely recall that even Simoni's and Ricco's were out of whack.

That's what I was alluding to. Also Piepoli had a similar asthma incident to Ale Jet.

What we need is a 6 month/1 year ban for the very act of putting soap in their urine. The very fact that they are doing something like that implies their guilt...

Interesting that some GT cyclists are registering hormone levels of a prebubescent male and FLandis hits 12:1 on the initial Testosterone ratio test in 2006.
