Bobke,
Cancellara won 2 u19 world tt champs. The second, his average speed was faster than Ullrichs. Say what you want about dope, but this guy showed his chops early. Phinney on the other hand, he was 3rd in national tt, he was 2nd in Tour of Alibiti tt (Canadian jnr race) to Tom David, a 17yo phenom who came 5th in the world tt. David is a bit of a climber too I think. So, Cancellara is freakish. There is another young guy, Marcel Kittel, German, from Thuringer Energie team who won the 05/06 jnr tts. He has not been so dominant in the espoir tts yet, but only is 19. Phinney is good, but lets wait and see. His mum is a former pursuiter, and I think she has a bit of an input. If jnrs configure their training just so, for either workload, or specialising, it can do wonders for their temporal position on the curve. However, it can compromise their future potential. See Volodimyr Dyudya, Milram leadout man, a young Ukraine. Rode about 4'18" in the pursuit in Athens. As a 19yo. Amazing. Lets see Phinney do something like that at the same age before you mark him. Lets see him back up in jnr worlds this year. He has two riders who will be gunning for him, Rohan Dennis a young Australian, 10th last year, and Tom David the young New Zealander. Both guys ride different seasons in the lower hemisphere and are considerably disadvantaged. Stop overrating Americans you flag waving, banner covering bigot. |

Bobke overrating Americans?
So it isn't so! Something went wrong in 2006. George Hincapie was supposed to win the Tour de France. We only imagined that he crapped out in a race that does not suit him.

Some of the posters at bikeforums.net were talking Olympic pursuit title for Phinney this year because the young fella got within 2 seconds of Wiggins at a world cup. Me and another Aussie had to remind these over excitable types that Wiggins can ride 4.15 and that a 4.22 for him was shit, even in his off season.

Someone could threaten Wiggins, like Dyudya, but it wont be Phinney. 2012 is his time, perhaps. classic, Dawson said the LA track was pretty slow, about 4 seconds slower than Beijing. I think Wiggins might even break 4'15" and get a time in the high 14's. Mcgee will be hard pressed to podium. If he does though, that will be a fiar effort, 3rd in Sydney which should have been a chance for gold, but he broke his collar bone 3 weeks before the pursuit. |
