Default installed bar end shifters, skips gears

Hello there,

I just installed a 9 speed bar end shifters (shimano) on my cannondale. It has a shimano 105 rear derailleur (9 speed), I also added new cables and housing.

Everything cut to proper length, no problems.
When I shift from the highest gear (smallest cog) to the next gear, it skips the next cog and jumps to the 3rd gear.
The shifters are in index mode, obviously if I put in friction, it works just fine.

How do I fix this?

Ensure the notched plate that goes on just before the shifter has the notch pointed down and the shifter is indeed in the lowest(highest gear) position when you align the notch on the shifter and plate.
