Default Too many choices!! Help!

Guys,

Hello to all. Seems a great forum here.

Wondering if some kind soul can give me some decent advice. Just been told my old Orange mountain bike, which has served me well for the last 5 years is now gonna cost 200 quid to fix (new chain and cogs which are all worn) and I was advised I'd be better off just getting a new bike.

These figs are all in GBP (my pound sign is bust!).

Here's my situ

I will mainly use the bike to commute about 20 miles per week and do a lot of hopping unto kerbs.

In the summer I do a few weekend trips of about 100 miles which are usually on roads or rough paths, but I'd like to leave the option of more serious off road stuff open if possible.

I could spend up to 500 but as I sometime have to leave the bike overnight in the city (where it can quite easily get stolen) sometimes I'm thinking it would be best to buy something at around 200.

I was looking at the Marin bike here: http://www.bikedock.com/index.php

Don't care about looks or colour, performance, reliability and especially speed are the important things.

Any suggestions or general advice?

Cheers all
