Default 29 er frames - Why steel

Question - Anyone know why most 29 er frames/bikes are steel? I'm guessing that the industry is still figuring out how the different stresses of these bikes affect the frame and steel is the safe way to go.

Asking cause I'm looking at a hardtail 29er for a backup and, like I said, most of the selectiion is steel frames. Some Al, NO carbon to be seen.

I think it's more a case of sussing out the market and aiming at those who want to be a bit different.
Check out Salsa for alloy 29er frames and I'm pretty sure Canondale has a couple of alloy bikes. Personally I like the feel of good steel for a hardtail even if it is usually slightly heavier.
Cheers
