globe ?
I have been riding a specialized globe sport for about a year. I ride everyday on campus, about 2-3 miles on side walks with some curb jumping to get around other students. I also ride the same bike about 2 times a week for a nice 10 mile ride. I am thinking about a different bike in the very near future. I am wanting input on a new ride. My LBS carry trek, specialized, giant. I really don't like either shop very much. too much attitude for me so I will not ask them any questions.
So... along the lines of a hybrid/commuter type bike in the sub 600 range what should I look at? It would be best to stay with the listed builders as they are avaible locally. I am not much on all the extra things to bolt on a bike so a base model is fine. thanks for the input kirk |

The first thing I would do is find a bike shop that has employees that WANT to be there and help all customers find happiness on a bike. But if your in a small college town I understand that your choices may be limited. If you can find any other way to find another bike store do it. I have took my money elsewhere when I encountered the same problem. Now about your question have considered a singlespeed\fixed gear? I recently purchased a Specialized Langster and I absolutely love it. If I had a safe way to commute to my job I would ride it everyday. A single speed bike is great for commuting and just riding around having fun. Hardly any maintenance is required. The Specialized langster will run you $650 to $700. Giant's singlespeed is the Bowery and I think it's about $550. The only reason I went with the Specialized is that it had mounting holes for a rear rack. Although I think the Giant Bowery is better looking.

I live on the edge of the texas hill country, so I must have multiple gears, plus on my longer rides the gears are needed. thanks for the input.
I have been looking at the FX by trek. I have read in several places that they are pretty heavy. so they might not be an option. also the trek dealer in my area only carries road and mountain bikes. I guess I may just do some up grades on the globe. and look into a road bike for the longer rides. kirk |

A nice bike sub 600 is the Trek 7.3 FX. It is sturdy and reliable and I know a few folks who have one and swear by it The Trek 7300 might also be something you want to take a look at.
The Specialized Crosstrail Sport is also a nice reliable mount in your price range. The Langster is a great ride as well. You can ride the Langster as a single speed or as a fixed gear. May I recommend single speed as opposed to fixed gear. I have not used Giant so I cannot comment but I am sure they make a bike to fit oyur need. Look for an LBS that will be friendly.
