I was wondering if anyone might have some advice for me. Often times when I'm time trialing and my heart rate is very high I begin to panic and have trouble breathing. On the rare occasion that I don't I set new personal bests. I'm not sure why I panic, it just happens. Does anyone have any breathing techniques or advice on how to remain calm? I would appreciate it.

I've had that too. Just don't think about breathing....if you think about breathing even whilst sitting still it seems hard..... |

When you say you panic, what are you afraid of? What causes you to panic?

I'm not really sure. I can't explain it all. I just realise how hard I'm breathing and freak out. What's wierd is when I'm running very fast it doesn't happen, I feel comfortable. |

tell yourself the race doesn't mean anything to the other 5 billion people on the earth, take four relaxed breaths, and continue on. repeat as needed

Break the race into thirds, 1st third start mod/hard 2nd third hard, last third flat out. When you cross the line you should have nothing left. Pratice this once every week so that when you race it is second nature (it only has to be 30 min TT) Adjusting your speed 1/2 to 1 km/h up or down can keep going fast or blowing out but learn to do this by precived effort not what your heart rate monitor tells you. I'm not say to never use heart rate monitor they are a valuable training tool but just to learn to read you body better. Another tip just focus on beathing out as quickly as possible the body will breath in on its own and deeper with this techquie. Make sure you practice this one before doing it in a race as its not as easy as it sounds. |
