Default During TdF, do they allow you to ride the roads the same day?

During the Tour of California, I just ride my bike up a road and watch the race come by. Is this allowed during the Tour de France? I am planning on going to the Alps next year to watch the race and was just wondering if I need to camp out days ahead of time or if I can ride the road the same day.

Thanks

I was at the Tour this year with the Discovery Channel team. I rode the courses they day before the pros with no problem at all. You can not ride the same day as the pros. Most fans camp out on the sides of the road.
