Default Hi, need advice for newbie please

I want to do a triathlon next year, and am already a runner and swimmer but I don't own a bike. I am also fairly poor. My problems are that I don't know if I will like bike riding, so I don't want to buy an expensive bike until I'm sure I want to continue. But then again, I don't want to not like rididng just because my bike is crappy, so you know what I mean? The other problem is the lack of much disposable income.
What could I get for an entry level bike that is good enough that it won't fall apart, that I could possible upgrade onto later if I like it?
Thanks for ideas,
Jennifer

I had almost this exact same delima not 7 or 8 months ago. try ebay or bikesdriect.com for good deals on decent entry-level bikes. Most of them are off-brand frames with entry-level name-brand components and will stand up to a surprising ammount of abuse. The important thing is that you get a frame that fits your body and a bike that fits the type of riding you plan on doing, but most entry bikesdirect bikes will cost you between 400 and 600 dollars. That said, even older "vintage" style road bikes can be ridden if they are restored properly, as I have seen some early 80's bikes on group rides in my club. If you're looking into triathlons, here's one to consider:

Or you could try good second-hand bikes.

For example, my LBS sells "pre-loved" bikes (which have been serviced & have a 3 month warranty). I got a Trek fitness bike from there, and it is still going strong 2 years later.
Right now there are two Felt roadies on display, which look rather nice.

The good thing about buying second-hand via a bike shop, is that they will check the bike-fit & will even let you pay it off in installments.

Happy riding

Welcome to the forum Jennifer.

It really depends on how much you will be able to spend - can you give us a rough idea.

Also, where are you Oz, the US...
