Default Weird stuff seen on your Commute?

Mine - An oven ready chicken fresh and ready to cook sitting smack bang in the middle of the cycle track. How it got there? I don't know. Why it was put there? An even bigger mystery.

Just like this but uncooked and without the plate and apples.

I've seen some weird paranormal activity as well a few times near the big cemetery I pass.

I saw one of those inflateable pool mats with just the head part still having air - laying in a ditch.

It was on the way home, the following day going to work it was gone, no sign, we don't have big wildlife in NZ but I guess a stary cat or dog could have pulled it away. The weird thing about it was the cycle track is a good few miles from any houses. May have been hurled from a passing car that runs parellel to the track but the chicken looked intact and should have suffered some damage if that was the case.

Saw a steak knife the other day...seemed weird...kind of like "I am laying here waiting to test your Specialized Armadillo's".

Actual weirdest thing was a friend of mine who had crashed his bike avoiding a deer and about a month later I had one jump out in front of me. I was on the brakes with about 15' left and was fortunate she continued across the road instead of doing the stop and "What do I do now thing" as my only exit was the tree line she just came out of. Go right and I'm in the trees...go left and I'm in her path...she stops I go into her.

I was probably doing about 20mph at the time and I am not sure who would have won the collision but have a feeling it wouldn't have been me.

I see weird stuff on my commute just about every day. I'm thinking of getting one of them extreme sports video cameras just so I can take little movies to put up on YouTube so people don't think I'm imagining it.

This morning at a set of lights as I approached, a little old lady went to press the button for the pedestrian crossing, and the box sort of exploded showering sparks all over. Must be a common fault, 'cause I saw another incident like that one a year or so ago, and often notice blackened poles like they've been on fire.

I've seen wheels come off cars, busses and trucks so many times I can now guess the path of the loose wheel.

Oh, yes, and just the otherday I saw a truck take out a footbridge right in front of me just as I was about to practice my climbing technique on it to cross the road for a short cut through the nature reserve.

Yeah getting a camera has crossed my mind, have made sure I have a camera on the phone though.

2 days ago I was turning into a very narrow walkway that also allows bicycles due to heavily congested roads nearby and the local city councils wish to appear "green". I noticed up ahead a moped bombing along. I was somewhat annoyed as I've seen a lot of teens on these scooters lately burning up bicycle tracks and causing havoc.
Anyhow the moped rider went off the walkway down a steep curb which impressed me with the skill involved in the maneuver. It was only when she turned to me that I noticed the rider could not have been a day under Eighty!!

I heard of 60 being the new 40 but that was amazing. Golden Girls meet the Hell's Angels!

She took off before I could snap her

We have Pheasants back home in the UK, that can be deadly. Male Pheasants during mating season often mistake brightly coloured bikes as rival males and chase after you. I had one that used to chase me that I called "Neal", (it looked like a guy I worked with at the time called Neal ).

There has been one report of a pheasant sticking its neck through a front wheel which caused the victim to crash and who subsequently died of a broken neck. It took police awhile to work out what happened.

We have no shortage of them here in Wisconsin either and our turkey population is booming. Fortunately I haven't had an encounter with one on the bike but I have had to stop more than once in a little town to wait for a flock of 20-30 to move out of the way RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN. Sounds like your pheasant are a lot more agressive than ours. All of them are tasty, but would rather take one with a gun or a bow than my Bianchi.

As I was heading off to work yesterday (still dark), I saw a car up ahead pulled over. I saw someone behind the car, so I figured he was changing a flat. As I got closer, I noticed he wasn't changing a flat but he had a hacksaw out and was cutting the antlers off of a dead buck on the side of the road. And the road I was on is a 4 lane state highway, so there is significant traffic. He wasn't doing this in any amount of privacy.

When I passed him, I looked at the front of his car - it didn't look like he hit it, that's for sure. I wonder what kind of hunting stories this will inspire...

Weirdest thing Ive seen lately was roadkill. It was a raccoon, laying on its back, paws in the air, and another cyclist had been so kind to stop and put a bottle in its paws as if it had been drinking!

The best thing I have seen so far was a family of foxes. Two adults and three young. It was ace.

Saw a 6ft python lying on a bike path bridge about a month ago. It had very colourful yellow patterns. I thought it was dead because it wasn't moving but when I got close it raised it's head and flicked out it's tongue. I wished I had a camera because when I told people at work I could tell they were sceptical. I've carried a camera most days since, which is a bugger cause it weighs about half a kilo, but haven't seen the python again.

Better than seeing a Momba I bet! Here in Wisconsin at least we don't have to worry about vipers. I am a bit worried about canines for riders up north. Our wolf population is booming and I wonder about the day that some MTB comes accross one with a wire crossed that might like to chase bikes like some of their domestic cousins.

Exclamation Weird stuff

Several time this year as I approached this one stop sign, people tried to pass me just before they had to stop. They ended up stopping in the opposite direction lane.

Were they on drugs or cell phone?
