Default Shifting For A Newbie

Hey guys I finally got my bike today!
But it is not shifting back up to the bigger gears...It has shimano speed 8 shifter and when i push the shift lever down it doesn't shift back up. Any usefull info?

Two ideas from me.

Check that the rear derailleur setup isn't completely screwed up. I had the same problem when I was playing around with the barrel adjuster and completely messed it up. After a little more adjustments the shifter started to work properly again.

If that doesn't work, most likely your shifter is kaput. That happened to my 8 speed earlier this summer. E-bay has some 8 speed coming up every now and then, or you can try to find a used bicycle parts dealer (that's what I did), or buy a new lesser grade component if you can find one. 8-speed is old technology, so bike stores don't have replacement parts sitting around.
