Default Bianchi Via Nirone 7 vs Giant OCR-1

Hi everyone,
I'm about to buy my first road bike, and at this point it seems like I am down to two: 1) Bianchi 2007 Via Nirone 7 / Tiagra Triple for $1000
2) Giant OCR-1 2007 for $850.

I'm tempted to go for the Giant because of the price, though I do think the Bianchi is a bit nicer looking (not terribly concerned about that though). I've ridden both and they are both comfortable. I guess what I'm asking is which do you think is better quality/a better deal? Any advice/experience would be appreciated!

Personally I think the giant is a good buy - according to the link, that Giant is 105 eqiupped (which is excellent), FSA Gossamer cranks with the external bottom bracket are good. Giant has a good warranty as well, Bianchi may as well but I'm not sure.

But that said, the Bianchi is also nice, Tiagra is one level below 105 and it's nine speed, not that that is much of a concern. I have never used Tiagra, but 105 is excellent. And I agree with you, the bianchi does look nice - I like that curvy top tube they are using this year. And the Via Nirone is still made in Italy - if tradition means anything to you.

Giant: Shimano 105 is all metal; no plastic. Tiagra has plastic. You'll get more miles out of the 105. The Bianchi has an alloy seat post; the Giant has carbon. Also the regular price of the OCR1 is $1,100 so you're getting a good price reduction. I have the OCR1; it's a smooth, responsive ride. If you are into racing then I don't think either one will work; both are a little on the heavy side (22 Lbs I think, the Giant may be a little lighter). The pedals are crap (the OCR shimano pedals; I don't know about the Bianchi Look pedals); you'll need road pedals. The saddle is OK but I replaced mine. The OCR1 is a VERY good overall entry level road bike. Having said that, buy the one you like and you'll feel better. For the prica of the Giant you can buy a nice set of pedals and a better saddle and still be probably under the price of the Bianchi

If you can't start racing on a 105 equipped Giant with carbon forks and a solid set of Shimano wheels, then I don't know what the hope is for the majority of people who would like to give it a go and not fork out loads of money - I'm still getting beaten by people with Sora components (and lower) who have been racing much longer than I have, have loads of experience and understand that racing is not about a kilo here and there, but about fitness, mental alertness, education and experience, and then the bike.

a lot of it is bling and advertising.

In a perfect world; yes. I agree with you. What I meant by "racing" was serious racing. You would have to agree that given all other variables being equal, a lighter bike is better for racing. The Giant is a very good bike. I enjoy it a lot and ride the heck out of it, but as I get better I will probably go to lighter bike. There are some very good ones for under $2,000; which is A LOT of money for me but the "shock" (in my mind at least) is not as great going from $1,000 to $2,000 as it is from $300 to $2,000- maybe I'm just justifying by next purchase
