Upgrading - STX/LX 8/9 SPD Compatability

Hi Everyone,

This is my first posting here.

I have picked up a Giant Sedona which is in pretty good nick, and would like to do some upgrading. First of all it has Gripshifters which I hate, I want to change these to LX or TX trigger shifters.

As the bike currently has an 8-speed cassette (on STX Parallax hubs), am I better off simply changing the Gripshifters to LX 8 speed shifters, or should I go up to 9 speed shifters and change the rear mech/cassette as well? So my questions are:

Are 8-speed LX shifters going to work with the STX rear mech?
Will a 9-speed cassette fit on my hub?

I dont personally see any gains with 8 speed vs 9 speed, except normally a smaller gear in the cassette (normally the 11T that i never use). YES i do own both 8 and 9 speed as well. the 8 speed is dissasembled however because of a cracked frame

you should be able to just buy the shifters (make sure cables come with it) and put the new shifters on, most likely new grips, tune everything up and youll be good to go.

i will also note that my 8 speed bike shifted much smoother than my 9 speed, and ive spent countless hours adjusting my 9 speed up and down, and settled on the best middle ground i can find.

plus, it will cost a lot more to fully upgrade to 9 speed. save that money and upgrade something else instead, wheels? brakes? maybe front fork? hope that helps....
