I recently installed Avid mechanical disk brakes on my bike and now after a few rides and attempts at adjustmest they are still squealing like crazy. Is there some adjustment trick that I don't know about? What can I do to stop it?
I have done a search and counldn't find this topic solved in any detail, it it resides somewhere please point me to it as I am sure that I am not the first person with this problem. Thanks |

clean the rotors with rubbing alchohol - and don't touch them with your hands. if that doesn't work, got to a motorcycle shop and get disk brake cleaner and clean the pads - and again, don't touch them with your hands. |

after doing the above, roughen pads with a rough "100" sand paper to remouve glaze off pads. You may also need to de glaze disc..... The material the pads are made of can cause this problem also.

Sounds like to me that the brake adjusters need adjusting on the in side and out side and possibly the mounts need adjusted as well, they should not be touching or rubbing at all till you aply the brake, Takes some patience but when they are centered and the inside adjuster is backed off about 3 clicks and the outer is adjusted aproximatly the same--they are great.
Maybe you where refering to a squeeling sound when using the brakes--that would lead to brake dust how ever they are supose to be self cleaning, becarful using cleaners too, some melt plastics very easly. Take care (o: |

I do not have much experience with bike disc brakes, but in a car application, brake squeal is caused by the steel backing of the disc pad osilating against the piston face. Vehical manufacturers overcome this by installing a thin steel shim between the piston and the pad.
