As of now, I hate my bike, a Schwinn Traveller. Not only is it incredibly heavy, but the wheels need re-truing at least every four months, the shift cables have rusted through, the brake pads are gone, and it needs new tubes and tires.
It's new bike time. While I don't know much about bicycles, I do know what I need it for: Transportation. For the next six years or so, I need something that can reliably take me to and from where I need to go, and do it fast, too - I'd like to be able to keep up with traffic instead of having to take to the sidewalks. The best bet for me looks to be the Windsor Dover, which goes for about $400 shipped with the optional carbon fork on eBay. It uses the shimano Sora components (which I can only get on $650+ bikes at the local store), and looks to be quite light. However, I'm a little nervous about those wheels - how many potholes before they get bent out of shape? |

"reliably take me to and from where I need to go, and do it fast, too"
Fast: A bike is not a car. You put your own energy into it, and the bike converts it into foward motion (Kinetic energy). The biggest determinant as to speed is your own athleticism. While some bikes are more efficient than others you cannot buy your way to 'fast' as you can with cars. The most important determinant of speed on a commuter is proper maintenance and proper road tires. Weight is not important as light bikes knock off relatively little weight for allot of money. Reliable: Consider a bike with an internally geared hub, or even a single speed. |
