Default Foot going numb

I'm fairly new to cycling, and have run into a slight problem I was hoping someone could help me with. After 10 or so miles, the toes/ball of my right foot will start to go numb. I'm currently using platform pedals along with running shoes; definitely not the best setup, but I want to make sure this is something I'm going to want to stick with before spending a whole lot of cash. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? Would going clipless help at all? Thanks.

Spend some money on getting a proper fit to the bike. What is comfort worth to you? Getting clipped in will ensure that your feet will be in the same position each time. I had similar aches and pains that would crop up after trying to make adjustments myself in search of being comfortable. I decided to just have a fitting done and quit pissing in the wind.

It may help but it sounds like your getting hot foot or metatarsalgia and I agree that you need to get a proper bike fit. Here is more info on that I did an article on it on pezcycling news.

Thanks so much for all this information RECOVERYDOC. I now have a number of things to try out. I'm currently using eggbeater pedals but I'm thinking of giving one the other types of pedals a try. Maybe one of the pedals that looks more like a standard pedal but has a mechanism to grab the cleat in the middle. My first try is gonna be simple though. I'll just get a full insole made of something that won't fall apart when I cut it and then remove the area where my foot burns. This should take most of the pressure off my hot spot.

I'll post again if it works.
