hey, lubin ur chain is a piece of piss. stand the bike upside down and pedal ur cranks with ur hands. squirt ur lube, i use GT85 on my bike because it has teflon and protects and lubes the chain. WD40 is ok for the chain too. its realy important to wipe the lube off the chain after, do this (with the bike still upside down) pedaling the cranks and holding a clean cloth around the chain, this takes out the crap in the chain and beds the lube into the chain also. when the squirt ur lube onto the chain, do it at the bottom bracket so u dont get lube on the rim and brakes which wld not b a good idea. Hope this was of help.
George Check urself before u wreck urself

Just in addition, every now and then it's also a good idea to give the chain a thorough cleaning -- in the long term, a rag alone won't be enough to clean out all the insides of a chain.
You can do this by either taking the chain off and immersing it in a degreaser of some sort (some chains have special links that make this easy), or else you can get a little bath thing that clips onto the chain, making it possible to clean the chain with degreaser while it's still on the bike. WD40 is a decent enough cleaning solvent, but not a good bike lubricant -- the lubrication it provides is far too thin and short-lasting for the loads bicycle chains see. I'm a bit pedantic when it comes to drivetrain cleaning.. on my road bike I clean and lube every 200km (and do the rag-lube thing roughly half in between), and on the mountain bike I do it after each ride, as it always gets horribly dusty and muddy. (The primary culprit for chain wear is getting bits of dust inside the chain, where it will slowly grind away the metal as the chain is used.)

rek has the right idea. I don't redo my MTB every ride but I only have dust to contend with in Central Oz (no rain). Because of this I have found White Lightening to be a great lube as it is wax based and dries shortly after application. This in turn stop the dust and grime sticking to it so I can go longer without having to clean and relube.

I lube my bike with Finish Line Cross Country before every ride. Every 3 or 4 rides I make sure and clean my chain thoroughly with a degreaser and a chain cleaner. Works good in the mud. I also recommend replacing your chain every 6 months or so.

I wipe and lube after every ride. I will use either my chain cleaning machine or remove the chain and degreasing in the kitchen sink every 4-6 rides. Simple Green is much less expensive chain cleaner than LBS ones. Works pretty well. Immediately after cleaning the chain, apply any type of lube to prevent rust..wipe well. Then follow these instructions before each ride.
WET & MUDDY RACES Pedros Syn Lube Wet or Pro Link. Soak the chain with lube. I even spray triflow on the rear cassette. I briefly wipe the chain...heck, I've come close to putting heavier grease on my chain before a wet race. Just plan on cleaning it off afterwards and apply an appropriate lube like Finish Line. DRY Dry lubes like Finish Line, White Lightning are great. Dribble...wipe well...turning the chain while holding a rag around it. Let dry for a few minutes. GENERAL Boeshield T9 is great as long as 1. wipe it off well and 2. You give it a day or 2 to dry. It's a great lube but you have to let it dry or else it gets really black-nasty. It lasts much longer than other lubes. Quote:
