I recently hurt my back at work. Not sure yet what is really going on in my back. All I know is...it hurts bad! Seems it is not quite my tailbone but above it. I am suppose to be getting an MRI probably by next week, as the pain is still bothersome, and I am having a hard time doing just simple everyday things now. Have had a doctor say that he believes it is not even really hurt exactly where I hurt at all. Something called displaced pain. Pain meds don't seem to touch the pain much either. Once my back is feeling better, I would like to do some kind of excersises or anything that would help strengthen my back as I do not want to re-injur it. Any suggestions on strengthening excersices that work? I think there is also a possibility that I am going to PT as well.
I would appreciate any suggestions on what may help me get through this, and how to make my back stronger so I don't have this happen again.... |

hey KerriD
i would suggest lots of core work and pilates exercise. depending on how hard you want to go i would begin on some simple backextentions then progress slowly through to deadlifts these will push your back pretty hard. the core strength would probably help the most tho. good luck, make sure you get a good qualified PT one that has a Exercise science degree or has been in the field for ages! dont leave your back in the hands of some of the new guys out there its too risky. I sympathize with you - I hurt my back in an accident also. My pain turns out to be a ruptured disk at L4/L5. I still may need surgery, but time is helping it settle down. Core exercises, stretching hamstrings and piriformis seem to helping the pain. Riding (not too hard) also helps the pain.

Hi KerryD I also suffered a back injury at work. My incident happened approximately 3 years ago. I do recommened that you obtain an accurate diagnosis from your doctor and possibly a physiotherapist or chiropractor. Many back injury seem to be a result of a strain. My therapy included ultrasound therapy and a combination of various exercises. Keep my hamstring limber was an important factor, as a tight hamstring can inhibit back flexibility. I also utilized anti-inflammatory drugs for the first few days of the injury, though I am hesitate to consume them. As you probably know, they can come with great side effects. Overall, I found the combination of progressive exercising along with therapeutic ultrasound therapy provided me with a quick recovery. There is some excellent information on back injuries and ultrasound therapy found at http://aidmyback.com/ I had suffered a slight back strain once again and I found the information at the aforementioned site to be helpful. Back injuries are definitely one of the most frustrating injuries to deal with. I do wish you luck in finding a suitable treatment. Your physiotherpaist will definitely guide you in the right direction. Robert Taylor |
