Default PowerTap bearings/cone drag?

Hi all!

Just wondering if anyone else has experience a "rough" or "crunchy" feeling from a PowerTap hub. I just got mine rebuilt with a new rim and when I was spinning it off of the bike, it felt pretty rough. In talking with the builder, they were of the opinion that this was common for the PowerTap. The hub has been in use for about 6 months and has about 2k miles on it.

Any thoughts/experiences? Is it time for a rebuild?

It is a known issue with the PowerTap Pro / Standard (yellow battery cover) hubs: http://www.midweekclub.ca/powerFAQ.htm#Q27 (includes suggested solution)

I still haven't done this, so I can't provide any more insight.

Mine is the SL, so hopefully I won't have to do that. I will try contacting Saris to see what options they have....

There are no cone and race bearings on the SL, just sealed cartridge bearings. If they're crunchy, you can try pulling off the seals and jet in some grease, or it's time for a bearing change (which means a trip back to saris. You can jack up the electronics if you try to pull/press the cartridge yourself).
