I've been training and racing on Ergomo units, and am a bit concerned on how much friction the seals and bearings produce on this ISIS units on my race & TT bikes.
Does, anyone have any data on Watts "eaten" by bearing seals and how much coul I gain if switch to a FSA/Dura-Ace SRM with or without ceramic bearings? |

My ergomo ISIS feel like it sucks more than .7 Watts. I don't think you can trust those numbers from ergomo, - they might just be saying that to make their product appear good.
Feels like it suck 6 to 10 watts to me! You gotta have an indepenednt lab test it. |

I think the ISIS units are stiffer than the ISO units (I have both) Given how stiff the ISIS units feel & the claimed difference between normal and ceramic BBs (3 watts?) my gut feel would have to be more than 0.7Watts. But I appreciate I'm being very subjective there. NGART - Are there any more details available for the Ergomo tests? Units compared, test protocols etc? Would be very interested. As am giving serious thought to shelling out for SRMs on my race bikes, which the bank manager won't thank me for! |

Hi mhj, ergomo tested the ISO unit against shimano ultegra outside bearring system and both systems were the same stiffness and power transmission no difference at all ...this was tested at Zedler the most famous german lab for bike testing. Greetings, NGART |

Not that I am a mechanical engineer or anything like that, but I remember reading that sealed bearings, while appear to have more friction when you just turn them by hand, have less friction when under a load, as they more evenly distribute the load. Loose ball bearings on the other hand, while feel very free and loose by the hand, actually have more resistance when under a load.
Granted, we are not talking about loose and sealed here, but my point is that just turning it by hand could be deceptive to what's happening under load. Also, the ergomo bearings are of a high quality and there are more in there than really necessary. The drive side has 3 sets of sealed bearings and the non-drive has 2 sets. All other BB's I know of, only have one set on each side, and as a consequence last only about a season, IF you are lucky. I'll take a .7 watt penalty any day over having to replace my ergomo every year! Hunter Buy your <Spring> Wattage training plan Online! www.trainingpeaks.com/hunter
