I am a relatively fit 68 year old but suffer joint (knee) problems that sometimes go with the age. Last year I cycled Holland as far as the German border, and another time from Dunkirke to Brussels ... both relatively level rides.
My question is will I find the Le Havre to Paris route covers similar terrain to that cycled in Holland and Belgium or is it going to be much hillier? My bike is an Orange Evo4 (as shown in my profile picture) fitted with rear pannier bags and for this ride I will be using 'slick' tyres. Having stayed and cycled Paris for a few days I plan to return to the ferry port by train and understand bikes cannot be carried on Eurostar without being boxed. Is anyone aware of other trains that will accept an unboxed bike? I would be grateful for answers to the above, and ANY information regarding this planned trip, cycling friendly accommodation for example, and contact can be made at ken1938@hotmail.co.uk If I can assist any Cycling Forum member with information of rides in my home area (Mid Wales) I would be very pleased to help. Many thanks. Ken Last edited by ken1938 : 16-03.-2007 at 12:06 PM. |

I am doing a similar route to you this summer, Calais allong the coast to the mouth of the Somme then inland followed by a cross country to Paris. We are expecting all our hills just out of Calais, en route to Boulogne sur mer and on the final cross country leg. Your route will follow the Seine (I assume) so should be relatively flat as this is its lowland basin. What I can't help you with is any knowledge of whether there is a cycle track allong the river, though having once been a shiping route it is likely. It will be a bit more hilly than the routes you have done so far, but I have no doubt, manageable.
And that comes from a 20 yr old student, one of the most unhealthy beasts to ever grace this earth. We're going for the Tour de France, may even see you in paris if thats your aim. We are also hoping to hop on a train, as far as I know, anything other than the Eurostar is fair game, we'll be getting a few cheap tickets up to calais then the far cheaper ferry home. Have a good trip!! |
