Default How to Relax and get some Sleep

Hi all, I have been training for 7 weeks now. I have my first race coming up on Sunday and I intend to train hard this week and rest Friday and Saturday. However, I'm a little over anxious and excited, this being my first race. My anxiety is so bad that I can't sleep at nights. If I don't get any sleep tonight I'm afraid it is going to affect my training and my performance on the race day.

What should I do to relax?

FIRST THING IS, DON'T DO ANY HARD TRAINING THE WEEK BEFORE YOUR FIRST RACE. IF YOU AINT FIT ENOUGH NOW, TRAINING THE WEEK OF A RACE WILL NOT MAKE ANY DIFF. I HAVE BEEN RACING FOR 10 YEARS NOW, IN AUSTRALIA, AND A LOT OF MY BEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN WHEN I HAVE COME BACK TO RACE AFTER HAVING A COUPLE OF WEEKS NOT RIDING AT ALL.

AND FOR RELAXING AND SLEEPING? HOT BATH BEFORE BED, HEAPS TO EAT, NO NEED TO CARB LOAD.( I HAVE PROVED THAT THAT IS CRAP. I LOST 40 POUNDS DOING THE ATKINS ALL PROTIEN DIET WITH NO CARBS AND STILL RACED FINE. AND STILL LIMIT CARBS WITH NO PROBLEMS RACING AND TRAINING) BUT I HAVE THE SAME TROUBLE RELAXING AND SLEEPING SO IF YOU FIND OUT ANYTHING THAT WORKS LET ME KNOW

So you don't think it would make any difference if I train hard tomorrow (3 days before the race)? Well, perhaps it won't make a huge difference but I think that for me it will be better than not riding any at all.

I just found this site: http://www.well.com/user/mick/insomnia/

Also, my friend was suggesting reading or meditating before going to bed to get my mind off cycling which I believe is the thing causing the anxiety... I'm anxious about my race on Sunday and about my training. I really believe that I have what it takes to become a very good cyclist and I'm sorry that I took so long to get into it. Since my first ride, I have been dreaming of all the big races in my country. All this, I believe has contributed to my anxiety. Right now it's hard, even at work to get my mind off cycling.

As for the Carb loading, I don't really worry about that. I eat a regular balanced meal every time and I eat when I need to. I don't over eat. However, I believe the body naturally calls for more Carbs than protein in any diet. The only time I would suggest to anyone to cut down on Carbs is if they are over weight or trying to loose weight.
