Gordon, you know Curt don't you?

Have you spoken to him about the new world record? It would be interesting to get his comments RE: the longevity of his record.

Saw this a while ago, that is an amazing record to beat the altitude mark at sea level.

Oh, that's an easy one.

For an avg speed of 73kmh the rider will probably want to hit the line at about 75kmh. To hold that speed they would need to ride a gear that allows them to accelerate to optimum cruising speed on the first lap and a half, apply a massive burst of power to accelerate onto the line, and hold the optimum cadence for the balance of energy systems in use for the sprint period.

These things all change depending on the track, altitude, temperature, humidity, tyre pressures, apparrel, etc. but those factors are a no brainer... really

But if you think of it more like a rider thinks of it then gear selection is based on feel. Experience gained from doing various training routines over and over and regular racing allows a rider to guage which gear is most appropriate in any situation: like their legs can feel the air and rolling resistance and provide the right feedback. Then all they have to do is be able to generate enough power at whatever rpm the gearing dictates.

Simple, eh? Perhaps that's why the record stood for so many years. The new record is going to take some beating.

And remember, each gear-inch means a difference of only 1 or 2 pedal strokes per lap. The guys at the pinnacle of the sport are scrambling for fractions of gear-inches to find the perfect setup on any given track on any given day.

I heard it was a 50x14....Gord Has the inside track on this one.....I dont think they have a 200tt record from a standing start, but one of the Brits is most likely the fastest right now. Staff or Mclean.(sorry to dis the Aussies Jacko) BTW Gord is still listed as #5 all time for the flying kilo I believe

FWIW part of qualifying for the Australian Sprint Team for comm and olympic games Team Sprint event involves a sub-18sec standing 250m amongst other things.

That's a bloody good question. No disrespect to the big man, afterall he was a World Sprint Champion, but Australia did seem at a disadvantage with his starts.
