I learned today that the CTC has closed its message boards due to a number of contributors who criticised the Ramblers' Association for hogging access to the countryside as well as various political machinations. It really is turning into a petty police state if voluntary groups won't allow free discussion within the access movement. The suffragettes wouldn't get far in this atmosphere of hear no see no smell no evil. Those who launch and manage discussion sites should strenuously avoid knee-jerk reactions such as the CTC has displayed today. Charities like the CTC and Ramblers are not private clubs and should remain open to criticism. Let all open minded contributors make a stand for free speech in this instance, to stop this setting a dangerous precedent. Please phone the CTC to demand an explanation, otherwise when you want to make a valid point, there won't be any discussion site to make it. I believe that the Chairman of the RA is responsible for this move, because she has been able to pull strings in the corridors of power, even though the police and Charity Commission are investigating. If you want to know more about what is going on, just ask.
