Does anyone know who won the German National Road Race Championship in 2005? I know Andreas Klöden took the honour in 2004, did he also retain it the year after?

Nope, Gerald Ciolek won it in 2005 in a mass sprint (beating the likes of Förster and Zabel aged just 19).

In this Index you find all information over the past seasons - calendars; results; rankings etc. http://www.cycling4all.com/roadrace.php & Ciolek was only 18 at the time - German surprise as Euro's decide national titles Youngster upsets the biggies in Manheim By VeloNews interactive This report filed June 26, 2005 First-year senior Gerald Ciolek ended T-Mobiles long running dominance of the German national road championships on Sunday, beating such German sprinting stalwarts like Gerolsteiner's Robert Forster and especially T-Mobile's Erik Zabel in the final charge to the line at the end of a 204-kilometer road race in Manheim. ![]() photo: Akud Arnolds Sicherheit - Team Photo The German event comes on the same day as all European national championship races. With 75 meters to go, it appeared that Zabel had the national title in the bag. But suddenly Ciolek, who has still contested junior events this season, charged out of the field to catch and pass the six-time Tour de France points jersey winner, with Förster stuck firmly on the 18-year-old's rear wheel. Ciolek has been looking for a ProTour team contract and Sunday's victory should help him in his job hunt. The T-Mobile team - which has held on to the German national road title since 1993 - had 14 riders in the event and controlled the race from the start, with Zabel as the team's designated captain. Only one escape succeeded in building more than a minute on the field, and that didn't last long as the T-Mobiles locked down the field, keeping close tabs on the front. Zabel was hoping to secure a German national title after being left off of T-Mobile's Tour de France team for the first time in 12 years. T-Mobile's Jan Ullrich skipped the race Sunday, after having competed in the Tour of Switzerland and focusing his last-minute preparation on the Tour, which starts next Saturday. Results 1. Jan Pokrandt 10. Marcel Sieberg |
