Here's something to bounce around as an idea for a different type of racing if you don't live around a track. How about mimic auto racing's drag races. Set up a course (safely) for a quarter, half or full mile and either race side by side (with brake(s) or quickest elapse time. If you legitimize it by getting correct permits, anyone can race by category of age, gender or whatever suites you. Its kind of like when you were a kid and you raced down the block. The thing I like about this is that its just like velodrome racing except straighter. For fat bastards like me who don't like criteriums or CAT 4/5 races for 20 miles, its perfect for that quick sprint down the road. It may attract more non-bikers to the sport as there are ways to make it interesting. What do you think about my jack-ass idea?

They actually used this kind of format for the Tour de l'Abitibi prologue this year. It was a 400m drag race essentially, two up. It actually was a really fun way to start a race. Not sure if you know the Tour at all but it's a Junior World Cup stage race in Quebec, Canada.

To the very best of my knowledge, it was first introduced back in 1979.
It was Jack Simes and Dave Chauner who started a series called A.B.R.C. American bike racing circuit. It was intended to allow riders of all the major disiplines have an opportunity to win races. The events usually took place in a city center. They had 500m straight line sprints, then 5 lap races for pure pursuiters, followed by a crit. All events totalled up points awarded to winners. The team with the best overall won. The money was good for those days, and it started some rivalries and good racing. There is your history, anyone got something to add? 2006 |
