Unhappy Knee Trouble

About a week ago my right knee started acting up. I began experiencing a 'bubble paper' popping type of sensation whenever I'd bend my knee. After a day of that, the popping sensation went away and my knee began to ache and creak like a rusty doorhinge. When I put my hand on my knee while bending it, I can actually feel the creaking. I can only put weight on it for a few moments before it starts to really ache. There is absolutely no swelling. I have a doctor's appointment next week, but I thought that I'd drop in here and see if anyone might have a guess as to what the problem might be. Cartilage wearing out maybe?

I'd guess a torn cartilage, but it's only a guess. Since soft tissue damage doesn't always show up on x-rays, it will require an MRI scan or arthroscopy to check.

A popping knee can be in indication of patellar femoral syndrome. The Vastus Medialis (VMO) can become weaker then the lateral quad, causing a mal tracking of the knee cap. I had the exact same symptoms early in my cycling days. Google it and you will find plenty of info on it. I went to a physio, learnt how to strengthen the VMO, and within a few weeks, the symptoms were gone.

Could possibly be a tracking problem. This is fairly common in cyclists and can come as a result of muscle imbalances in your legs. The patella can be pulled slightly to one side, which can make it rub against the end of your femur. Usually a good dose of physiotherapy, anti-inflamatories, massage, stretching and strengthening exercises will get the problem back on track.
Best to get it checked out by a proffessional sooner rather than later.
