Default Bicycling & Hearing

I recently completed the RAAM 24-hr challenge from Oceanside, California to Flagstaff, Arizona. Much climbing, but so much fun! While cycling along the highway, however, I came to the realization that the sport can be quite noisy-- wind, motor vehicles, etc.

As a part of my doctoral research, I am conducting a brief survey regarding bicycling and hearing. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey:

Your participation is greatly appreciated. Also, please forward this to your other cycling friends and acquaintances!

Thanks,
Aaron

congrats on the raam stage. more to the point, your survey does not account for my gradual hearing loss due to the noise level at my place of employment. i am not an audiologist, but the db's there are greater than anything i've subjected myself to on the bike.

Interesting survey. I often find that the wind noise is loud enough that I don't hear 3/4 of what is said to me by my riding partners. I would be hesitant to wear earplugs though as I would not want to block out traffic sounds. I don't ever wear earphones on the bike either.

Hi Aaron,

I completed your survey and I passed it on to my cycling colleagues.

Hearing is an important aspect of cycling, given the volume of traffic on roads today, it is important that cyclists have as much sensory observation of what is around them at all times.
