I am a 44 year old male road rider and have been having problems the last two seasons at the onset of group rides. We have a couple mile warm up and then pace picks up and I have trouble staying with the pack. My thighs feel dead or just plain hurt to the point that I have to back off. Later into the ride my legs feel strong and I can push it hard. I take 4 Ibuprofen with a little food about an hour before the ride and drink Gatorade during. Is this just an age related issue, since most the riders are younger than me, or is there something I could do different, in particular prior to the ride to curb this problem (nutrition, stretching, supplements….). Any help would be appreciated.

I have had similar problems riding in my teens and 20's, and now that I'm 29. I don't think it's a factor of aging. For me I've always chalked it up to my body requiring a little longer to warm-up. When I ran track in HS (sprinter) I always had a very hard time warming up during the winter and early spring meets. As much as I hate hot weather, once the summer came (could hit 110 degrees F or more on the track) my performances improved exponentially. This has been true for me on the bike as well. When I ride alone I may take up to 10 miles to really work myself up to a proper pace. When I do that I feel like I can ride all day. If I rush my warm-up I tend to crap out pretty early. For group rides I would show up early and get a few miles of warm-up in on your own. Play around with how many (or few) miles you do on your own before the ride and you'll soon find the magic number that will allow you to stay with the pack when the pace picks up.
