Default The ever popular 'which bike?' post, but with an SS flavor

I'm a roadie who wants to get some dirt under his wheels and wants to do it cheaply - not anything more than $800. Because of that price ceiling, I'm looking at a singlespeed. However I have myself a choice - Either a Surly 1x1 with disk, or a Gary Fisher Rig with a rigid fork instead to save about $400 making it in at just $800. Basically I just want a bike I can beat the crap out of, and can just stick in the closest during road race season with no problems. Any suggestions? The cheaper the better!

Do you have any old mtn bikes lying around? I ride a singlespeed exclusively now and I basically stripped off all the unnecessary components off my trek mtn bike. If you can find a good used bike at a swap meet or in the classifieds and convert it to SS, I'd say that would serve you very well.

I will say that I looked long and hard at the Surly, and I have a 1x1 rigid fork on my bike and I like it very much. I think they make pretty bombproof bikes relatively inexpensively. However, the frame an fork will be ~$400 and a parts kit might run the price well over your limit.

The Gary Fisher sounds like a good deal as well and they make strong bikes. I suppose the final decision will come down to the price. And I don't think you can go wrong with singlespeed as a bike for thrashing around.
