I want to start riding to classes w/ my clipless - but after I arrive I don't want to change shoes and I want to be able to walk around without the clip clip digging into the pad of my foot. What shoes are actually made for this?

Check out Shimano shoes designed for recessed SPD cleats. Many of these will also accomodate other cleat systems (e.g., Speedplay Frog). In particular, look at the Shimano Touring shoe (model T-092), which you can buy at Performance.
