Unhappy Recovery from pneumonia

Hi there,
I am a recreational cyclist and had struggled with a cold for weeks and then developed pneumonia (bacterial). I was in hospital for a week on IV antibiotics and fluids. The pneumonia was caught reasonably early, but was nipped in the bud and treated aggresively because I have a history of chest infections and asthma. Although I feel well and the cough has now gone, I am really tired. Is this normal? Sleeping about 10 - 11 hours a night. I don't know when it would be best to hop on my bike a go for a ride. I want to get back into riding but don't want to overdo it and knock myself about. I dearly would love to go back riding with the girls, Any ideas????
Thanks, much appreciated
Regards, Sam.

Recovery from pneumonia often takes a lot longer than you expect. Most people don't get good levels of energy for several weeks. If you are still tired, take it slowly and eventually re-start your riding beginning with short, slow rides. See how you feel the next day. If you are really tired, then it was too much, too soon. If you are okay, then you can gradually increase. If your body is craving extra sleep, don't ignore it or deny it! Drink plenty of fluids and try to eat plenty of fruit & vegies but there is no quick fix that will sort you out.

(Be aware that some people might tell you they had pneumonia and got over it very quickly. Doctors often over-diagnose pneumonia and give people treatment for it when they actually have a cold, the 'flu or bronchitis. If you had a real case confirmed on chest X-ray and requiring a week in hospital, then you were SICK and will take weeks to get back to normal.)

Thanks Patch 70,
Yes the pneumonia was confirmed on X-ray and on sputum culture (Haemophilus Influenzae). I was on IV Ceftriaxone 1gm for 6 days plus oral antibiotics.
Guess I must take it easy then.
Regards, Sam.

if taken antibiotics one should replace the bacteria that was destroyed by antibiotics

Let me explain Probiotics are life giving bacteria
When antibiotics are prescribed doctors don't get their patients to replace these good bateria which dominates the gastrointestinal tract in every human being.
This bacteria colonizes the GI tract to fight off food borne pathogens and in general strenthen the immune system. I would look into a good high Quality probiotic supplement. Keep in mind that most probiotic supplements need to be refrigerated. There are stable forms of probiotics in the supplement The Greatest Vitamin in the World. Their are people bashing the company because they feel that they have been cheated on the marketing they have done with no results. Vitamins are hard to sell because everyone has been sold on TV and think that all vitamins are the same and that more costly vitamins are not worth the money. This is not true however because you get what you pay for. I have been taking these vitamins for a year and this has helped me. I even ate a turkey sandwich one time that had been sitting in the car until lunch with the windows rolled up. Because of the probiotics in The Greatest Vitamin in the World I did not become ill.

I know this supplement works.

And the evidence is?
Apart from a weak association for Lactobacillus GG helping a tiny bit with Clostridium difficile infection and perhaps even a tinier bit with helping to eradicate VRE, not very much.

In the intestines, esp the large intestine, there are trillions of bacteria per square centimetre. In a pill or bottle of probiotics, there are not even enough bacteria to cover one square centimetre. How many square centimetres of surface area are there in the whole intestinal tract?

You also don't know what antibiotics she took. Were they narrow or broad spectrum? Did they have activity against anaerobic bacteria? If she took antibiotics with minimal or no activity against intestinal flora, then she would not need to replace them.

Ok I'll contribute
I was on Rulide orally and Ceftriaxone 1gm IV daily - 6 days.
I'm only just getting back into cycling again - I was feeling too tired to attempt. I'm also now out of condition, but I'll get there eventually. I'm finding my lungs are burning and closing down a bit despite Tilade and oxis. Perhaps the air is a bit cool and dry at the moment. It is starting to cool down now as well - had to put jumpers on the kids this morning for school!!
Regards, Sam
