Hi everyone, I'm new to the board, so hello to everyone here.
I've been training and cycling for the last several years, and I'm happy with my overall conditioning. However, I find that I'm now getting severe muscle soreness. Usually it sets in several days after a hard ride. I'm pretty happy with my nutrition and training so I'm not worried there. Does anyone know of a good supplement to offset DOMS? -Andy |

Eat enough protein and carbs in the hours following your hard ride. Drink plenty of water. I do many, very hard races and training rides and almost never get DOMS when using these strategies. |

I do use a protein supplement and a carb supplement after my workout, and this seems to help as well. I've been reading up on DOMS, and I've found some interesting research that talks about enzymes and muscle inflammation. Basically, the studies say that DOMS is more of an enzyme issue and an inflammation issue than a glycogen and cortisol issue - and in light of my nutrition it seems to make sense – I’m doing everything right and I’m still sore. Searching around, I found a supplement called SorEnzyme that looks pretty good. It's supposed to reduce DOMS by 62%, which in my case would be amazing, because it has enzymes in it. So I’m going to give it a try. Do you know anything about this supplement? -Andy |

I don't know about it. Maybe you can add 1000mg of C before your rides and another 1000mg at another time during the day. C is a very good antioxidant. I guess I wouldn't care about the Sorenzyme product since I don't have a problem with DOMS after rides. |

I can't say that I've been wrestling with this dilemma for awhile but it is a topic about which I do have some interest. First, I believe that the DOMS is not preventable. I say this because I think there is no way to stop the pain created by the breakdown of muslce tissue. But what may help ease the pain is to reduce the acidity of the blood during workouts. I think this contributes to the DOMS effect as much as the physical breakdown of the tissue. I don't know how to keep muscle pH regulated other than eating (or drinking) baking powder. And truly, I don't know if this will do anything to help the situation either.
Otherwise, take measures to begin rebuliding the tissue soon after workout to help lessen the pain. Note: progressive overload will help lessen the DOMS effect by not loading the muslce too much thus creating an excesive amount of breakdown. Ian |
