Default seatpost diameter

Ive had 2 different types, 25.0 and 27.2. No worries i thought. My wife has an Avanti corsa, it takes a 26.8mm seat post. Is that a normal size. Stupid me spent 20 mins trying to jam a 27.2 in to it. Then another 20 trying to get the bugger out! (all the time thinking 'it shouldnt be this hard, just stop') but i didnt derrr

Is this a normal size that everyone has heard of? Has my head just been in the sand?

26.8 is a fairly common S.P. diameter, but there's a ridiculous number of these 'sizes' - pain the @ss if ya ask me.
