I use an XTR setup on my climbing bike and it works well. To get the right chain length, wrap the chain around the big chainring and the largest cassette cog and bring the ends together (don't thread the chain through the rear derailleur, shift it down to the smallest cog out of the way). From the closest matching links (inner link with outer plates) add two more pins worth of chain and cut there. In other words the minimum chain length needs to be one link (two pins) longer than the minimum length around the two biggest gears. You can make it longer, but that is also less than optimal... the extra length adds unnecessary weight and may cause it to shift less precisely. BTW, you should always avoid shifting into the big-big or small-small gear combinations because the resultant excessive chain angles will cause accelerated wear on both the chain and gears.
