Default Tour of Germany 2006

Yesterday the route of the Tour of Germany (Deutschlandtour) was published.
Jan Ullrich said the Tour of Germany is his second highlight after the Tour de France and he wants to win it (somehow i heard this before..). It`s not as hard as last year but the two mountain stages in the Austrian alpes (August 6 & 7) are pretty hard. On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 (Mountain Timetrail) there are races for amateurs as well.

The route:

Tuesday 1. August: Prologue (ITT) in Düsseldorf, 10 km
Wednesday, 2. August: Düsseldorf - Bielefeld, 198 km
Thursday, 3. August: Minden - Goslar, 209 km
Friday, 4. August: Witzenhausen - Schweinfurt, 202 km
Saturday, 5. August: Heidenheim - Bad Tölz, 192 km
Sunday, 6. August: (Mountainstage) Bad Tölz - Seefeld, 189 km
Monday, 7. August: (Mountainstage)Seefeld - St. Anton, 180 km
Tuesday, 8. August: (ITT) Bad Säckingen, 40 km
Wednesday, 9. August: Bad Krozingen - Karlsruhe, 182 km

It could be a big year for Jan. He's always seemed to ride best when he's been under the least pressure. I don't think anyone expected him to win in 1997, and he walked away with it. Then, in 1998, he proved he could ride with Pantani; unfortunately, he waited until after he'd lost 6 minutes. In 2003, he had his strongest Tour after losing time early on Alpe d'Huez.

Though I guess you could say being the big favorite is even more pressure than being the "only" threat to Armstrong.

Ullrich didn`t wait in 1998, he didn`t eat enough at one mountain stage and lost the Tour...

last Sunday I got to ride with Jan Ullrich, in Mallorca Spain towards the end of my training camp – the first day of his. Telecom is finally doing it right this year, so I think Jan will have a get chance of having a banner year.

From an e-mail I sent a friend…

“This year Telecom is building a USPS/Disco team around Jan - finally. They are all learning English, and being tested, in previous years team members couldn't even talk with one another due to a lack of common language. Also they are being tested on each others country of origin, families, etc. Basically they will get to know one another whether they like it or not, they will be able to communicate - at least basics, or be off the team, and they have a clear leader finally and that man is Jan! I really hope this year is better for him, Bianchi was a better team for him than Telecom ever has been, but finally they have figured out that the old recipe doesn't work, and needed to be changed. It's sad that it took them so long, and it cost Jan a lot of years...”

He is looking fit, and is in great spirits from the limited discussion I had with him and a few of his team mates. Some of the stuff sounds so simplistic, but if you can’t tell your team mate what you need – then he can’t do it for you even if he wanted to. When you don’t have a clear sense of team you are a bunch of guys wearing the same clothes out for yourself. When you don’t have a clear leader, that just intensifies the “don’t have a sense of team” factor and people get their own ideas – look at last years TdF.

At any rate, I think his chances for a great season this coming year are better than they have been for a number of reasons.
