Angry New XTRs sound crunchy?

Hi all, i just recieved some new XTR hubs (M965) built onto Mavic 717 rims.
When i spin the wheel, theres a crunchy grindy noise coming from the hubs. both the front and back. The sound is like theres metal fragments moving in the hub body.

Does anyone else with XTRs have this problem?
Maybe im expecting too much, i thought they would be silent and smooth!
Quite strange its comming from both hubs.
I'm not sure if i should rebuild them or contact the shop (chainreactioncycles) that built them?

Alan.

brand new hubs should NOT grind!! The noise will almost certainly be because the cones are too tight and are grinding the bearings. I agree it is strange that both hubs are grinding. do they still grind if you hold the wheel in your hand and spin it then? It is simple enough to fix by loosing the cones off a bit, but i would get crc to take them back and fix because the bearings might be knackered. CRC are usually very very good so just give them a call and I am sure they will help. I have just this week ordered a new set of wheels off the same company. (Hope XC disk hubs with mavic XM317rims and dt db spokes. A good deal at just over £200) Personally I prefer sealed bearing because they are so much less hassle.
