Question 'cros vs. road frame size differences...

When compare to mountain bikes, road bikes have larger frames. Yet how does it work when one is sizing for cyclo-cross frame? Should I aim for the road frame size or try to get something slightly smaller than my road frame? For example my usuall road frame size is between 61 and 63 cm. What would then be an ideal cyclo cross frame size?
Thanks.
