Can't believe this hasn't been talked to death yet...

First Edition Cycling News for November 8, 2005

Edited by John Stevenson & Les Clarke

Heras suspended

Spanish rider Roberto Heras, four-time winner of the Vuelta a Espana, has been suspended by his Liberty Seguros team following a non-negative A sample test for EPO from stage 20 of the the 2005 Vuelta.

The team's management company Active Bay suspended Heras on October 27, but did not announce the action while it awaited results of the counter-analysis of the B-sample, the team said in a statement. However, the team said a leak to the press had forced it to reveal the case.

The team said it believes Heras is innocent of the charges, but affirmed its dedication to the fight against doping.

So why is it that Heras rides like a chubby bloke on a chopper at The Tour? Is it because he finds it harder to take EPO in France (more chance of being caught, more difficult to smuggle the stuff over the Pyrenees), or that he would feel guilty about riding well at two Grand Tours with EPO in his veins, seeing it as somewhat greedy? Why does the cycling fan have to be such a cynic? His battling with Menchov was the highlight of La Vuelta). Of course even if he was guilty he's still going to get off with it now that the UCI accredited EPO test has been shown to have its flaws. And remember, nobody at US Postal took EPO, that's why Heras (arguably) became a worse Tour rider after leaving Lance & Co.

it seems that's what the UCI thought and why they targeted him for testing during La Vuelta.
