Great idea, looks very interesting if a bit expensive.
I'm sure one could do it alone or with a friend a bit cheaper.

Easily. I did Budapest to Istanbul over a month summer '04. I did a very easy pace with stopping a couple times for a few days.

Not an exact tally, but I spent probably around $2500 (with airfare).

I only camped about 8 nights.
