Hi to all first of all

The mechanical brakes came on my bike. (GF Tassajara 03 or 04 cannot remember). I dont know that much about bikes and although they suit me fine I'm not sure whether they are considered as good brakes by the wiser riders. Does anyone know how to adjust these? I'm riding quite a lot at the moment cause I just moved over to Scotland and am enjoying the wet and muddy countryside!! How long do the pads last under normal braking??

Thanks
