Default Kids next step up from 20" - hybrid or MTB?

I have a nine-year-old who has outgrown her 20" and is ready to move up. Most kids I see in the neighborhood have MTBs. But my guess is that few of them really do much in the way of rough-terrain riding. I know for me and my kids we spend most of our time on pavement with the occaisional dirt trail or grass.

So I'm thinking that a hybrid makes sense. But, for some reason they don't seem too popular. One bike shop I went in said they don't carry them because there isn't enough demand. I could just get the ever-popular MTB like everyone else, but I want to make a good decision, considering her age and the type of riding we do.

Oh yes, and I was also introduced to one of these "comfort" bikes - just to add to my confusion.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply -

However, I should note that my daughter is quite tall for her age. She is already 5', so I am not really interested in a "kids" bike with 24" wheels. I checked out the link, and that appears to be the main subject of discussion. No one there mentioned anyhting about hybrids. I guess right now I am leaning toward the hybrid idea, because it seems to make sense to me. But, I would like to know if anyone has input about what might be a better choice given the age/size and type of riding.

OK, try the Giant CRX range in a small size:

However Felt do a similar style of bike with 650c wheels, SR91-47, SR81-47:
